Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
