Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
