The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
