Cars in German City Found Smeared with Nazi Symbols in Blood, Police Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Police
Officers reported they were contacted by a resident who noticed a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored liquid

Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Police then found numerous other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.

A senior official stated the incident rendered him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
